Veterans Tribute Trail

The Veterans Tribute Trail tells the story of local participation in America's military conflicts, preserving the legacy of those who served. The trail begins with a monument of Old Abe, the legendary war eagle who accompanied the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment into battle during the American Civil War. Today, a replica of Old Abe sits atop Memorial High School, serving as the school’s nickname and mascot. The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Screaming Eagle insignia also commemorates this remarkable mascot, considered the most famous animal to serve in the United States Army.

Throughout U.S. history, our nation has been involved in numerous military conflicts. Due to space limitations, the trail will focus on the following:

  • Civil War (1861-1865)

  • Spanish-American War (1898)

  • Philippine-American War (1899-1902)

  • World War I (1917-1918)

  • World War II (1941-1945)

  • Cold War (1944-1994)

  • Korean War (1950-1953)

  • Vietnam War (1961-1973)

  • Persian Gulf War (1990-1991)

  • Iraq War (2003-2011)

  • Afghanistan War (2001-2017, Ongoing)

This tribute ensures that the sacrifices and stories of our local heroes are honored and remembered for generations to come.
