Legacy Stones

Legacy Stones are located to the west of the Tribute Mall in Veterans Park, serving as a lasting tribute to those who have served. Veteran stones are crafted from gray granite, while Killed-in-Action stones are distinguished in red granite, honoring the ultimate sacrifice.

The Meaning Behind the Coins: The tradition of leaving coins on headstones became common in the U.S. during the Vietnam War. At a time when the nation was deeply divided, veterans used this silent gesture to pay respects without directly contacting the fallen soldier’s family. The coins symbolized a "down payment" for a future reunion—perhaps to share a drink or a game of cards in the afterlife.

In keeping with this tradition, all money left on Legacy Stones is collected and contributed to the Veterans Tribute general fund to support ongoing efforts in honoring our heroes.

  • A penny – You visited to pay respects.

  • A nickel – You trained together in boot camp.

  • A dime – You served together.

  • A quarter – You were present when the soldier was killed.

This time-honored custom ensures that the service and sacrifice of our veterans are never forgotten.
